Precedents: Weather
Rain Room

Rain Room is attraction that involves walking into a dense field of heavy rain. Rain Room tracks a person's movements as they step into a precise, 100 square metre cuboid torrent of water, yet they remain dry. It goes against our instincts to walk into water pouring so insistently, but every movement is anticipated - quickly shoot out your arm and still it stays dry; change the speed or angle of your walking and still the rain stops. Lovely visual details appear: look up and the droplets are a coruscating constellation, look forwards and the colour spectrum appears in the drops.

Architecture is supposed to be the location of security and certainty about where you are. It is supposed to protect you from the weather, from darkness, from uncertainty. Blind Light, by Antony Gormley, undermines all of that. You enter this interior space that is the equivalent of being on top of a mountain or at the bottom of the sea. It is very important for me that inside it you find the outside. Also you become the immersed figure in an endless ground, literally the subject of the work.

Tetsuo Kondo Architects created a small bank of clouds in the Sunken Garden of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
The clouds billow softly in a compact, transparent container and can be seen from the entrance hall, exhibition galleries, outdoor plaza, and other parts of the museum. The stairs can be climbed inside the clouds’ container. When climbing to the top, the museum,
the surrounding buildings, and the sky stretch out above the top of the clouds. The edges of the clouds are sharp yet soft, and always in motion. Their color, density and brightness are constantly changing with the weather and time of day. The temperature and humidity inside the container are controlled to keep the clouds at their designed height. The air inside the container forms three distinct strata:
- One cool and dry, at the bottom
- A warm and humid middle stratum
- A hot and dry stratum at the top
The warm, humid layer is where the clouds form. The transparent container is constructed from clear 48.6mm diameter pipe. The flexible outer frame makes the whole structure responsive to wind pressure. The constantly changing clouds are both soft structures and part of the natural environment that surrounds
us. It is not the structure alone, but the invisible differences in humidity, the temperature, the weather, the time of day, and other aspects of the surrounding environment that make this work an artistic whole.
Berndnaut Smilde - "Nimbus"

Artist Berndnaut Smilde creates indoor clouds, controlling the weather. The Dutch artist can turn a clear sky cloudy - indoors. In his latest project, he’s installed real Nimbus clouds in empty gallery spaces in Amsterdam. Smilde’s godlike powers come from simple science - he carefully regulates the temperature and humidity of the space, ensuring that conditions are perfect. Then, he sprays a short burst from a fog machine to create a cottony cloud suspended in the middle of the room for just an instant before it collapses. “I’m interested in the ephemeral aspect of the work,” Smilde said in an e-mail. “It’s there for a brief moment and then the cloud falls apart. It’s about the potential of the idea, but in the end it will never function.” Smilde’s clouds dissipate so quickly that they exist mainly in photographs. He chooses surreal spaces, such as empty churches or galleries, as his setting. One photo, taken in a room with bright blue walls, is evocative of the painter Rene Magritte’s azure skies and puffy clouds.

Things to think about
- What type of lighting?
- How will we change or show the environment e.g. raining - lighting? fog? colours?
- Where are the lights positioned? Can they be moved in order to refocus e.g. portray the four seasons (four corners of a room - each corner of the room will be a different weather)
- Think about screens or physical products, how will lighting move around, suspended on rails?
- Floor level- smooth, flat, gradient, flow of traffic through exhibition, isolation of certain parts of room.
- Create an environment to someone to perform in e.g. performance of the show or human performance.
- Technical detail - location, type.
- Create an environment to immediately use for a specific purpose in terms of weather e.g. over head media, projection points - where will it project, flat surface?
- Where are the speaker placements, from or behind participant?
- Interplay or relationship between different areas of the room, one thing or having the option of changing things in the room.
- Surface area, direction of lighting and sound, ability to move these, creating an environment where someone can project a movement.

The signage plan Hara Design Institute created for the Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum is stunning. It is complex in places, used to draw guests into the museum and it is subtly informative where people need to be guided through the space or provided with information.

All Design’s London office is in a refurbished Victorian era dairy in Battersea at 33 Parkgate Road. They share this building with a whisky distillery, a boxing gym, a slow food kitchen, an Arabic art gallery, and a bar. Recently All Design created an awesome custom wayfinding system to help visitors navigate the meandering walkways and halls that lead from the car park in to all the different spaces within. The signage has all been fashioned out of fibreglass with the exterior, bulb-shaped sign acting as a pointer towards the building's entrance, as well as listing the businesses currently ensconced in the building.

SOFTlab

Developed for the EPFL+ECAL lab in switzerland, SOFTlab has designed the exhibition and graphics for the installation ‘gimme more.' Using large structures made of tyvek sheets, SOFTlab’s design defines the gallery’s open, industrial space. wrapped around suspended cardboard tubes to create volume, the panels act as dividers to help separate the installations and create an environment for the show. Back-lit by custom-designed lighting fixtures, the volumes contrast the texture of the tyvek to create a kind of glow at each installation. Pixel-like, modular typography forms the identity of the exhibition - scaled for various applications - from large graphics in the gallery window to the printed exhibition program. In exhibition signage, the triangular modules were cut out or projected to create type that was dimensional and constantly changing.

In Praise of Shadows aims to add spark to the debate by raising questions not only about how we use energy for lighting but also how we illuminate our lives - challenging the modern obsession with ‘brighter is better’ that has held sway for the last century. In Praise of Shadows showcases works by 21 European designers who imaginatively explore not only the potential of low energy lighting and alternative energy sources but also the way we think about light and darkness. The exhibition includes works that play on poetics of light, for example Fragile Futures by Drift. A magical hybrid of nature and technology, the electric circuit seems to grow organically over a wall sprouting dandelion seed heads along the way. It also includes works that demonstrate the freedom that low energy light sources can bring to lighting design. For example, Medusa by Mikko Paakkanen - an extremely lightweight chandelier where each LED is enclosed in an inflatable pocket.

Since 2003, Gmachl and Rachel Wingfield's Hackney-based studio Loop.pH has combined science and design for projects ranging from community enhancement schemes in Hackney to installations at London's Kensington Palace.

Super Nature Design present The Scent of Light exhibition is an interactive lighting installation
exploring how the scent of light may be able to change our emotions and vision through a unique interactive experience. This approach demonstrates the ability to stimulate cognitive senses in various ways, where their newest projects such as Floral and Spin express light in a visually enhancing performance. Spin brings motion to emerge with the notion of light in the dark. It is an extension of kinetic illuminants that construct form and volume in a flexible manner according to speed output. Floral provides a vivid sense of calmness and harmony as an integrated experience. It captures new memoriesin layers that reflect a timeframe as an evocative gesture for our cognitive senses. The intervention allows us to look into new perspectives and understand the wisdom of nature.

Walter De Maria - "The 2000 Sculpture"

A pioneering figure in the development of minimal, conceptual, land art, and installation art, Walter De Maria has made minimalist horizontal sculptures that occupy entire rooms since 1969. Measuring 10 x 50 meters (approximately 33 x 164 feet), The 2000 Sculpture was first exhibited at the Kunsthaus Zurich in 1992. The initial installation of The 2000 Sculpture represented an ideal relationship between sculpture and architecture.

In his installations, sound is used as an architectural element, it defines space and it makes the spectator be a part of a totally unique experience. He uses simple elements (cardboard boxes, cotton balls, plastic bags, filler wire, motors and ventilators) that when combined in the correct way they form an original orchestra of sounds. These sounds all at once define space, interacting with it as well as with the spectator. The final result is a bunch of kinetic installations that form their proper universe and almost seem alive.

White is a spatial and interactive gallery installation reminiscent of relational art. It is an exhibition space, a meeting point, a ‘common room’ within a gallery and it is designed by Studio 400. The viewer has the chance to take part in the installation and become part of it. White has been constructed to be temporarily inhabited by the people who come to visit. The white space is calming, inviting and playful and it becomes a hub where people can explore the different books and enjoy them in a space made exclusively for them. 80,000 square feet of plastic sheeting have been sliced, loomed, woven, stapled, taped and tied to provide a climbable and malleable surface in the 4,500 square feet gallery space. Some bespoke book slipcases are scattered around this space, along with all the different research books. These laser-cut, clear acrylic panels, aka the bookcases, serve as the hanging elements that would be the interface between the installation and the user. This is very smart way of showcasing the books, as the visitors are invited to step in, crawl, climb and sit down and read the books. It is like a library space, which is interactive, non-static and fun.

The temporary installation in London, which was conceived and built in three weeks, was created to display garments from Topshop's autumn/winter 2011 collection to the press. Twister proposes a spatial configuration built of swirls, swooshes, vortexes and eddys - manifested as a system of hand formed black PVC coated tubes onto which garments can be hung. Visitors are invited to follow the structure as it winds through the room, while encountering concentrations of displayed garments along the way. The black tube also acts to bind the various collections together into one thematic whole. Around the structure sits a second layer of smaller white structures; benches and tables that hold shoes, accessories and makeup displays, as well as acting as seats for visitors.

This eye-catching Pop-Up Habitat is made entirely of repurposed reflective panels used in photography. The panels are combined into a lightweight structural system that can be assembled and collapsed into a small package in minutes. Designed by Beijing-based People’s Architecture Office (PAO), Pop-Up Habitat was chosen as one of the winning projects at this year’s Architizer A+Awards competition in the Pop-Ups and Temporary Structures category. The Pop-Up Habitat is a modular, multi-purpose system made of reflective panels. It uses their rigidity, flexibility and collapsibility to create an array of spatial configurations. Each module consists of two halves that can be easily folded and transported in small packages. The versatility of the material allows it to be assembled into different structures-auditoriums, galleries, canopies and other shelters. Modules can form arches and rooms or free-standing decorative structures. Easily assembled by unskilled labour, with modules attached with nothing but Velcro, these structures can have infinite number of variations and patterns. They are playful and visually engaging, and allow even children to be architects.
